While Onyx is most commonly understood as a black, shiny stone with few variations, it can actually come in a variety of colors and patterns. Many derivations are partially translucent, and can be lit from behind for an extraordinary stained-glass effect, almost as if it is glowing from within. Onyx can make incredible statement pieces in the form of backsplashes, countertops, flooring, and even wall pieces. This rare and beautiful material is a great addition to any design, and when properly sealed and supported, can last a lifetime.
Like with other stones, Onyx should be sealed upon installation, and resealed every one to three years, depending on frequency of use. This material is more porous than most other stone materials, and thus, the sealant plays an especially important role in keeping your stone looking its best. When cleaning, avoid acidic cleaners such as vinegar, and take care to clean up spills containing acidic materials (such as fruit and tomato based liquids) quickly. Due the translucent nature of the stone, it can be susceptible to staining. If staining occurs, flush the area with warm soap and water and wipe it down with a microfiber cloth to avoid scratching. For general cleaning, any designated stone cleaner will keep your stone looking great.
